California is on fire again, but this time the fire is fairly close to us (about 30 miles away) and because of the Antelope Valley winds yesterday we were shrouded in the smoke and ashes. Today isn't bad, but yesterday was very disturbing. Here's my description of yesterday's events.
Alan and I dropped Kyle off at LAX yesterday morning after he spent a week of R & R here prior to BYU starting tomorrow. After we dropped him off, we proceded to the Los Angeles Temple where we attended the 9:30 session -- probably the largest session we have ever attended. It took about 2 1/2 hrs. to complete. On the way home, we could see smoke billowing up from the mountains east of the 405 freeway. As we drove along and got onto the Antelope Valley Freeway (14) we could see that the whole sky was black, grey, and red with smoke and ash. It was just hovering over the area (and over our car) like a blanket. Over where the fire was it looked like a bomb had dropped and left a mushroom cloud in its wake. Looking at this scene, I kept thinking about Doomsday and Armegeddon and what that could possibly be like when it happens. It is hard to describe the feeling except that it seemed eerily calm and sureal like a pending doom.
I wish I would have had my camera with me as we traveled under this blanket of doom, but I didn't. I probably could have gotten some pretty amazing pictures. I did take some photos from our home, but these don't really give justice to the siutuation or create the eerie feeling that went along with it. Anyway, here are some photos taken from our home. This is the best I could do.
