After the temple session, we ate some lunch and then set out to go to the Pantages Theater to see the musical CATS. When we arrived at the Pantages Theater, we were a little early so we decided to walk around the area in order to try to burn off a few calories from lunch. One street right next to the theater was blocked off and we could see that there was some kind of rally going on. Hoping it was a Tea Party, we walked over there to check it out. Unfortunately, it was not a Tea Party. It was an Anti-War protest and you could easily tell that it was liberals participating in the rally. Unfortunately, I forgot to bring my camera with me today so I have no pictures to post here. You'll just have to trust me that the protestors were a bit on the noisy, and ...how shall I say it -- unsavory side. I didn't like being there at all...especially when I compared the spirit I felt there with what I had felt in the temple. I was only too happy to get away from that area.
I had been looking forward for weeks to being able to attend CATS, but I have to tell you that I was quite disappointed in it, especially the first half. Neither Alan nor I had a clue what was going on that whole first half. We picked up bits and pieces here and there, but it was hard to hear the lyrics and couldn't see that there was a story at all -- just a bunch of cats in some kind of a dump area singing and dancing. The scenery didn't even change at all. I have to admit, though, that the costumes were pretty awesome. Truthfully, however, I was so happy when the intermission came so I could give my ears and eyes a break. I was tempted to just leave the theater right then and forget the second half, but we had paid a lot for the tickets so of course we stayed. Thank goodness it was better than the first half...I actually enjoyed most of it. Things livened up and there was actually a bit of a story to it.
When I compare CATS with other Broadway musicals that we've seen like Le Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and Beauty and the Beast, I don't think it compares at all. I guess if you really like stricktly singing and dancing you would find this an amazing musical. Maybe cat lovers like it better than I did, but then I've never been a lover of cats.
