Back in May, I had a post talking about our May Year of Dates date to the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound in Mojave. Last weekend, Alan and I had the chance to cash in on that date. Unfortunately, Southern California had been going through a heat wave and the temperature that day was over 100 degrees, but that didn't stop us from going. We went on the "Twilight Tour" which costs more, but it is in the evening after it starts to cool down and the cats are more active. On the twilight tour, you are allowed to go to areas that are off limits on the regular tour. I have been on the regular tour before and this was MUCH BETTER!
They don't have all large cats there...only the ones that are solitary. Probably my favorite large cat is the Cougar (Mountain Lion), but this cat was very elusive that night. I saw him for only a split second before he disappeared back into the enclosed area, so no good pictures of him.

The tigers were probably my favorite to watch that night. One particular juvenile was very active and playful with a cardboard box. I took lots of videos, but they didn't turn out well because of the position of the sun.
I found it interesting that they gave some of the cats a big block of ice with chicken parts and other types of meat. I think this was for two reasons: 1) it was a nice treat for the cat and 2) it was like a giant popsicle to help keep them cool in this heat. This was the playful juvenile I spoke of earlier licking his chicken popsicle.
This was the biggest cat in the park. We were able to get very close to him. Thank goodness he was in a cage.
Not a great picture, but this is one of the leopards.
It is not only cats they had there. This peacock and the mother & baby peacock pictured below are also residents.
