What's In A Name?

For our "Come Follow Me" home study, we have been learning about King Benjamin and the words he taught his people in the book of Mosiah in the Book of Mormon. He was a righteous King who set a great example and taught them how to serve, and how to love God so they could live in peace. I have always admired his words and teachings.

While studying the teachings of King Benjamin, I remembered that when Alan and I were just starting our family, we decided that we wanted to give each of our sons a middle name of someone from the scriptures. Our hope was that they would feel honored to bear the same name as one of the righteous leaders from the scriptures. As for their first names, we simply picked names that we liked.

Ryan's middle name is Matthew - one of Christ's apostles and writer of the gospel of Matthew in the New Testament.

Eric's middle name is Michael - Christ's co-creator of the earth. He is also known as Adam, the first man to inhabit this world.

Jared's middle name is Benjamin after King Benjamin as described above, who was also a prophet in the Book of Mormon.

Kyle's middle name is Andrew - another one of Christ's apostles, and the first of the twelve to be called.

We feel that Matthew, Michael, Benjamin, and Andrew were honorable names for our sons to carry.

Alan and I both admire all past and current apostles and prophets of the Lord, not just the four names we gave our sons, but these names now hold a special place in our hearts.

As for our daughter, Cheryl, we chose not to give her a middle name since I wasn't given one and I use my maiden name as my middle name. I'm struggling to justify that decision now. If I could turn back the clock, I would give her the middle name of my mother, Lois. As it turns out, Lois is one female name that can be found in the scriptures. Lois was the grandmother of Timothy. Who knew?
